Nainital history

Legend has it that while Shiva was carrying Sati’s body, one of her eyes fell down on a spot where a lake sprang up, now known as Nainital (Naini for eye, and tal for lake).

This lake finds mention in the Skanda Purana as Tri Rishi Sarovar (The lake of three monks). There is a Naina Devi temple by the lake where the goddess Shakti is worshipped every day.

History has it that Nainital was rules by the Khasiya family, which was overtaken by the Chand dynasty. The British took over the Kumaon Hills around 1814 and created a hill resort at Nainital, building the first European house, the Pilgrim Lodge followed by more settlements for British soldiers who came here to escape the heat of the plains. Jim Corbett was born here as were Anoop Jalota and cricketer Manish Pandey.

Food options in Nainital Tour Packages

Next to accommodation, food is another major consideration. We recommend indulging in regional food for a more immersive experience. There are street side stalls that offer such Kumaoni and Garhwali cuisines, and there are larger establishments aiming to give you the genuine stuff. Our guides will give you options and show you the way. Some popular regional foods are described below:

  • Bhatt ki Churkhani: This is a dish made from black soyabeans cooked in a spicy gravy, which makes it perfect to consume with local flat bread or steamed rice.
  • Aloo ke Gutke: The humble potato comes to life in a unique way. Boiled potatoes are given a tempering of mustard oil, red chilli, turmeric and local spices. Eat it with local flatbread or deep fried puris.
  • Gahat ke Parathe: Look for gahat ke parathe to go with the above dishes. Gahat is a local brown lentil, which is boiled to a paste and then stuffed into dough made with ragi and wheat flour, rolled flat, and cooked on a hot griddle with oodles of clarified butter. Try it with a curry made from the local Fiddlehead Ferns available during the rainy season.
