History of Mussoorie
Popular history states that an Englishman, Captain Frederick Young and another official F J Shore, climbed the hill from the Doon Valley in 1827, fell in love with the scenery spread around them, and set up their house here. The British soon made it their summer resort, and one can see charming little villas, cottages and bungalows as their lasting legacy. Mussoorie can proudly claim to be home to Ruskin Bond, Bill Aitken, and film actor Victor Banerjee. Tom Alter, who once acted in Indian films, was its popular resident.

Food and culture of Mussoorie
Naturally, while you are here, it is best to sample the delectable local Garhwali and Kumaoni cuisine. Some must try dishes are:
- Kappa, a curry made using Spinach leaves and is best eaten with steaming hot rice or chapattis. It has no garlic or onions.
- Bhang ki chutney is a sauce made using hemp seeds, cumin seeds, garlic leaves, tamarind, and salt, which goes well with chapattis and rice, or the local Gahat ke Parathe.
- Gahat ke Parathe is a must-try morning breakfast flatbread stuffed with a boiled paste of the local brown lentil known as gahat. Stuffing goes inside a dough made of wheat and ragi flour, rolled flat, and cooked on a flat griddle with ghee.
- Baadi is one of the local specialties, a sort of gruel made by mixing buckwheat flour with water and boiling it to a thick gruel, best savored with hot butter or ghee and chutney on the side.
- Kandali saag is a curry made by boiling the stinging nettle plant, reducing it to a pulp, and garnishing it with tomato and butter.
You may find these in local eateries, or if you pick a home stay with food, your host may treat you to these scrumptious dishes. Our tour guide will show local restaurants serving regional cuisines.
