Corbett Park History

The history of this park goes back to the early 1900s when the British proposed setting up a national park in this area. By 1930 the area was demarcated and the Hailey National Park came into being in 1936, named after the then Governor, William Malcolm Hailey.

After independence it was renamed Ramganga National Park in 1955, and then renamed Corbett National Park to honor Jim Corbett, author and naturalist who had done a lot to set up the Park.

The main goal of setting up this park was to protect tigers, elephants, and the Indian rhinoceros. The Project Tiger wildlife conservation project was launched in 1974 in this park, which also happens to be a protected area covered by the World Wide Fund for Nature.
